My skills

I have spent many of the recent years of my life aware of the fact that life is not fair. Degrees don't guarantee you a job and unless you're wide awake to the opportunities afforded you, you'll miss them. Hence, I've used the opportunities that have so graciously come my way to develop some skills. Relevant to my research, these are:

  • A sound understanding of the scientific methodology
  • An understanding of the need for an open-source attitude
  • Excellent coding skills with a deeper understanding of compiler theory
  • A thoroughly creative mindset for approaching difficult problems
  • A systemic perspective on problems, people, and the world
  • An open mind
  • The wisdom to know what to let in

I haven't been around all that long, but I have achieved some stuff:

  • Awarded the best poster award at the International Conference on Biometrics in Halmstad, Sweden, June 2016
  • Awarded best Masters Studentship at the 2015 CSIR Modelling and Digital Science Excellence Awards
  • Awarded 2015 Best Student Researcher of the Rhodes University Computer Science Department
  • Presented the outcomes of my research to the Honourable Naledi Pandor (the minister of science and technology) at the 2016 budget vote
  • Presented the outcomes of my research to Dr Phil Mjwara (the directory general of the department of science and technology)
  • The outcomes of my research was presented to the president of the Republic of South Africa at the department of home affairs' e-Channel launch (2016)
  • Awarded my Masters in Science (Computer Science) with Distinction
  • Finished my degree (in Computer Science and Physics) with distinction in Computer Science
  • I published eight research articles in the space of just over 2 years
  • Travelled to Milan, Italy and Moscow, Russia to present my Masters work
  • Member of the Dean's list at Rhodes University
  • Golden Key member
  • An average distinction and six subject distinctions for Matric
  • Finished first place academically in Matric
  • Academic honours awarded in grade 11
